Stanley Kubrick's sweeping period piece follows a lowly-born 18th-century Irish man Redmond Barry, who managed to climb his way up through to the highest echelons of noble society through a miraculous combination of opportunism, trickery, and Luck. However, fate soon comes to cash in on Barry's misdeeds, sending his empire into a slow and indignant fall from grace.

Having won four Oscars at the 1975 Academy Awards, Barry Lyndon has often been hailed a technical masterpiece. Notably, Kubrick decided to film the entire film without any electrical lighting. All shooting took place in broad daylight, or by subtle candlelight. He also made use of subtle zooming techniques to flatten the depth of field, creating shots with uncanny resemblance to paintings from the time period.
