TRUE SOUTH
The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race holds a unique place in Australian culture. Every Boxing Day, as the Cricket Test breaks for lunch, millions of viewers switch to watch the start of The Great Race. For days we follow the fleet’s passage into one of the world’s most treacherous stretches of water — Australia’s own Bermuda Triangle, the Bass Strait — tracking the boats, their crews and the weather systems that can turn the race into a battle for survival.
True South follows lifelong friends Herman Winning, and brothers Nathan and Peter Dean, aboard Andoo Comanche — the most powerful super-maxi in the world — racing in honour of Nathan and Peter’s father, John Dean, who was lost in the 1998 disaster. Marking 25 years since that fateful year, their campaign becomes a moving exploration of grief, legacy and the resilience of the human spirit.
Narrated by Sigrid Thornton AO, with an original score by Elena Kats-Chernin AO, TRUE SOUTH is a visually stunning and deeply human Australian story made for the big screen.
