In the Georgian era of stifling societal norms, the idealistic notions of enlightenment come to the Wollstonecraft's household where a young 16 yr. old lady is given an opportunity to spread her wings in Scotland. Mary meets Percy Shelley and falls passionately in love with him and his modern ideas about relationships. Accompanied by Mary's half-sister Claire, the couple elope. While staying in the home of the notorious Lord Byron at Lake Geneva, the guests are challenged to write a ghost story, which leads Mary at the age of 18 to conceive her novel "Frankenstein" ... a metaphor for the monstrous open relationship she has found herself in and the neglect and loneliness of her situation.

"As the first female filmmaker in her native land of Saudi Arabia, and a controversial figure in her own right, it is clear that Haifaa Al-Mansour was born to bring Mary Shelley's story to the big screen." Film Inquiry

"April 17, 2018
The film offers a romanticized, dark, and racy depiction of Percy Shelley and Mary's scandalous love affair. Fanning and Booth capture the combustible chemistry Percy and Mary must've shared to become historical figures of gothic romance." Film Threat

"A welcome showcase for the considerable talents of Elle Fanning, who deftly shades the trials and tribulations of the young writer and her complicated relationship with Percy Shelley" Village Voice
